Cosas que ver en Toledo

La Puerta de Alcántara es un monumento de Toledo, situada en uno de los laterales de la ciudad imperial. Junto a esta se encuentra el Puente Alcántara situado sobre el río Tajo. Dicha puerta de acceso al interior histórico de la ciudad, rodeada por ambos lados por la muralla.

Sus creadores fueron los árabes, allá por el siglo X pero sufrió unas pequeñas remodelaciones por los cristianos siglos más tarde.

La Puerta Alcántara tuvo mucha importancia durante la Edad Media como forma de protección, ya que por ella entraban personas y mercancías. Añadiendo también que estuvo cegada hasta su redescubrimiento muchos años después en 1911.

Tiene una entrada en codo, muy típica de las defensas islámicas, con tres lienzos separados por cubos. El vano principal es un arco de herradura de caballo flanqueado a ambos lados por dos grandes torres cuadradas.

Es la única puerta que se conserva de las tres originales puertas de la plaza de armas que el visitante encontraba al atravesar el recinto del alfar musulmán en la muralla oriental.
